“Are the Russians Coming?!?”

OK. So tourism in the Middle East has taken a hit by a few on-going wars; nothing new for our region, right?

Perhaps we need a new kind of tourist; a brave and hardy type of tourist – and preferably one that has money to spend, right?

PRIEZZHAITE K NAM, RUSSKIE TURISTIE! POZHALUSTA!!!

Yes, we need the Russian Tourist, and in Jordan we should – by all accounts – be spending all of our tourism efforts in attracting them; after all, they used to love to go to Egypt - but that’s no longer on the table due to terrorism; they used to love Turkey, as well - but politics and a small thing called the Syrian civil war have closed that door. In, fact the only Russian tourists in the immediate region all wear military uniforms, and their favorite destination seems to be the “seaside resort of Latakia”…

But, what about Jordan??? No wars or terrorism here; they can still swim and enjoy great weather at the Dead Sea and in Aqaba. There are no baptism sites in Egypt, Turkey or Syria… and Jordanian weather is unquestionably the best in the entire Middle East - so why not bring them to Jordan?

Does the Jordan Tourism Board have the Russian Cultural Attache’s or Commercial Attache’s contact information? What is the JTB doing to take advantage of this golden opportunity, when Jordanian hotels are teetering with tearful occupancy rates?

Maybe we should get the JTB to print a few fliers… in Russian please, and organize shifts of Jordanian hospitality executives to lob them over the embassy walls; that might work! Surely the hotel executives must have some spare time on their hands…

So... are the Russians Coming, or not?!?
